This record by Herbs is striking for its cover image and ironic title. At a glance, it looks like a typical idyllic Pacific image – little islands, palm trees, and a vaka (canoe) sailing in a vast blue ocean. However, a bright exploding mushroom cloud presides over French Polynesia. The ‘light’ of the Pacific is in fact radioactive.

 

Brutal reality

At the time of the record’s release, France was carrying out nuclear weapon tests at Moruroa and Fangataufa atolls in French Polynesia. Most of the tests were hundreds of times more powerful than the atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Japan in1945.They caused reef damage, landslides, subsidence, radioactive emissions, and fish poisoning.

 

Herbs

Herbs was a prominent and successful New Zealand reggae band.The members have used their music to speak out about issues such as nuclear testing in the Pacific.Reggae lyrics often address political issues, with their hard-hitting messages often 'sweetened' by the beats and swing of the music.
