Schtüng came from Wellington, New Zealand and were formed, when Andrew Hagen (keyboards, vocals, guitar) and Morton Wilson (guitar, vocals) teamed up with Englishman Geoff Bowdler (percussion) and ex-Full Moon Express sax/flute player David Bowater.Looking for a couple of additions, Schtüng came to their final form, when bassist Rob Sinclair and keyboardist Paul Jeffery joined the band.PolyGram head of A&R Gerry Beyering contacted the band for an album and their debut was recorded in 1977 (Polydor). They were intended to become the answer of Wellington to the Auckland-based Split Enz, as both bands shared the same love for 70's British Prog Rock. But history proved that the less theatrical, slightly jazzier and certainly more dramatic style of Schtüng was not music for wide consumption. The strong presence of sax and flute and the Fusion interplays between keyboards, guitar and flute along with the usual display of melancholic orchestral parts was a hard pill to swallow for the local audience.Nice use of electric piano, nice Moog synth leaks and some beautiful melodic lines are mixed with melodramatic/romantic vocals for a pretty tight and slightly symphonic sound.Regular gigs were hard to come, so the band later moved to Auckland in desperation.Upon returning to Wellington in 1979 there were plans for second release, which folded apart after a couple of line-up changes and the band started losing patience.
