South Locust is an eerie street sign half glimpsed at night somewhere in North Texas – an apocalyptic marker.

South Locust is also the second album from Auckland Tāmaki Makaurau noiseniks Swallow The Rat.

Swallow The Rat have roots in both their current hometown and as far away as Austin, Texas, which makes them a perfect fit for their US label Shifting Sounds.

Now a three-piece, Swallow The Rat — Brian Purington on guitar, Stephen Horsley on bass and vocals and Hayden Fritchley on drums and vocals — return with a new dual vocal attack, while the new stripped-down format provides more space and dynamics.

South Locust captures the collision of driving riffs and hazy atmosphere that defines Swallow The Rat’s sound – which swings from wiry NZ post-punk to raw shoegaze to post-hardcore to Texas psychedelia.

The album was recorded with acclaimed engineer Nick Abbott (Robert Plant, Foals) in Auckland, mixed in Los Angeles by Sonny Diperri (Protomartyr, Animal Collective) and mastered in Chicago by Carl Saff (Sonic Youth).

Proving that musical synergy is not restricted by geography, Swallow the Rat is a sonic force to be reckoned with.
